Brake Failure on the Hill: The Dump Truck That Went Into Pineview
It was a Friday afternoon in July 2023 in the Ogden Valley, and a dump truck loaded with topsoil was heading northbound on Trapper’s Loop, one of the steeper descents in the region, dropping toward the SR-39 intersection not far from Pineview Reservoir. Witnesses reported seeing the truck braking hard as it descended, smoke rising from the wheel hubs as the brake system reached its limit.
The driver tried everything. He steered onto the soft shoulder to bleed off speed. But when the truck reached the SR-39 intersection, there was nothing left to stop it. The fully loaded dump truck crossed into the reservoir.
Emergency dispatch began receiving calls at 3:49 p.m. Responders arrived to find the truck partially submerged, the driver still trapped inside the cab. For hours, crews worked to reach him. Just before 6 p.m., the dump truck was pulled from the water, but the driver did not survive.
The Utah Highway Patrol investigated and determined that brake failure caused the truck to lose control. The driver, carrying a full load, had descended a grade that required sustained braking on equipment that couldn’t hold up. It is a scenario that has occurred on steep Utah grades more than once.
