A lava flow dammed a valley here and made a lake with no outlet. What leaves it goes down through holes in its own floor, and then splits: about 40 percent to the Colorado, about 60 percent to a desert basin that reaches no sea. The federal survey proved it with dye in 1954. Every figure here is quoted from its source.

A lake with a hole in the bottom

No surface outlet, three sinkholes, and a continental divide that runs through the water rather than around the lake.

Navajo Lake has no surface outlet. Nothing flows out of it. What leaves it goes down through holes in its own floor, and then it splits.

The federal survey wrote an entire chapter of a professional paper about this in 1964, and the sentence that matters is this one :

"Water from Cascade Spring is tributary to the Virgin River; that from Duck Creek Spring continues via Duck Creek, Duck Creek Sinks, Lower Asay Spring, and Asay Creek to the Sevier River. Thus the major divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado River basin cuts through the waters discharged from Navajo Lake."

Read that again. The continental divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado does not run past this lake. It runs through the water coming out of it.

The split is approximate and the federal survey says so. It comes from tracer tests run at particular flow rates in 1954 . Nobody has published a better number since, and a later federal report says the boundaries between the groundwater basins up here still need more dye tracing to define .

This is not inference. In August and September 1954 the federal survey released water from the lake into individual numbered sinkholes and dyed it, then waited at both springs with a stopwatch .

Velocities: 5.6 to 12.5 feet a minute to Cascade Spring, 5.8 feet a minute to Duck Creek Spring . A separate trace poured a pound and a half of fluorescein into the Duck Creek Sinks on 24 August 1954 and picked it up at Lower Asay Spring 68 hours later .

The sinks are not separate plumbing. This is the finding that makes the whole thing strange. Pouring water into any of the sinks raised the discharge at both springs, which told the investigators that "the individual sinks feed a reservoir in common, which in turn discharges to both springs" . There is a single body of water down there in the rock, and it is what splits, not the sinkholes.

Those 1954 travel times are still the numbers in the modern federal literature. The 2010 Markagunt Plateau hydrogeology report reprints 8.5 hours and 53 hours .

Two agencies describe the conduit differently, and one of them is describing the wrong rock.

The geologists are right. The lava is the dam, not the pipe. The water goes down through the basalt and then dissolves its way through limestone underneath it, which is what karst is. This page uses the geological survey's description and prints the Forest Service wording so you can see where the common version came from.

The cave is closed. The Forest Service closes it to public travel for low oxygen and high water flow . That is not a formality. It is a flooded limestone conduit that moved dye at up to twelve and a half feet a minute.

Cascade Spring rises 6,400 feet south of the sinks and 160 feet lower , at the Pink Cliffs escarpment .

The lake exists because lava blocked a valley. The federal survey : it "was formed by a lava flow which cut off the natural surface drainage of Duck Creek, a headwater tributary of the Sevier River." The flow came from a volcanic cone about half a mile northeast of the sinks, and a second cone seven miles east blocked the same valley again.

Nobody has dated the flow that made this lake. The 1964 paper puts the basalt eruptions loosely, "probably began in the Pleistocene and may well have continued into the Recent Epoch" , with no radiometric date. The Smithsonian volcanism catalogue dates the youngest flows of the Markagunt Plateau field to about 1050 of the common era from tree rings, corroborated by Southern Paiute oral tradition , but that is the Panguitch Lake flows, not demonstrated for this one. So this page does not tell you how old the dam is. Nobody has published it.

But a lava dam leaks. Before the dike went in, the lake "would drain almost dry during drought years" .

There is no outlet to either river. The only outlet works is that 24 inch pipe, and it discharges into the sinks . So even the deliberate releases go into the karst and split 40 and 60. Nothing here has ever been plumbed to one basin or the other on purpose.

Who owns the dike could not be established. The 2023 project names the wildlife division as lead with the water resources division, the Dixie National Forest and Kane County as partners , and states no owner. The federal dam inventory and the state dam safety database both proved unreachable for this structure, so no federal identifier, official height, hazard class or inspection date is printed here.

The dike protects the western three quarters. It does not stop the sinks working. The federal survey recorded that on 21 July 1954 "the water over the sink area had been completely drained by the sinks" .

Two numbers give the range this basin swings through . Inflow in 1955 and 1956 was 630 and 550 acre feet, about 14 percent of the twenty one year average. In 1958 it was 11,710 acre feet.

Cascade Falls has gone dry. In each of the winters of 1955, 1956 and 1957 Cascade Spring stopped entirely, for between 50 and 160 days . The waterfall people drive up Highway 14 to see is a spring, and a spring can stop.

The same report raised a possibility it could not rule out: that the underground channels might enlarge to the point of "complete underground piracy" . That was 1964. Nothing found here says whether anyone has looked since.

Two federal river basins, one lake

The water body record files it in the Great Basin and the gauge network files half of it in the Colorado. Both are right. Nobody publishes how deep it is.

The shape at the top of this page was traced by hand for a print, then scaled to the extent of the USGS water body polygons and measured off its own coordinates.

It came out closer than any lake Fathom has published. The two shapes are 3.9 percent apart on proportion, and the whole plausible range of areas spans less than eight percent:

The drawing also measures 3.19 miles on its long axis, against a federal extent of 3.18 miles.

And the 1964 measurement holds up. The professional paper gives the maximum surface area as 1.1 square miles, 714 acres . The two modern federal polygons add to 2.86882 square kilometres, 709 acres . Sixty two years and two completely different methods, 0.7 percent apart.

This is not a metaphor. Two federal datasets put the same water in two different places, and both of them are right about the thing they are describing.

The surface hydrology says Sevier. The groundwater hydrology says both. The lava dammed a Sevier headwater, so the basin the rain falls into is Sevier, and that is what the water body polygon records. What comes out of the floor is another matter, and the gauge network is filed accordingly. The divide runs through the gauge list at this one lake.

The dike is in the federal map data. The water body layer holds two polygons for Navajo Lake, not one: 2.030 square kilometres west of the dike and 0.839 east of it . Somebody digitising this lake drew the earth bank as a division of the lake itself, which is the right call and quietly unusual.

Utah's wildlife division calls it a "shallow natural lake" . That is the most specific published description of its depth that could be found.

The 1964 professional paper contains a full area and capacity curve and no maximum depth . The state gives no figure. The federal water body record gives no figure. There is a federal report that would almost certainly have both a mean and a maximum depth, an environmental agency eutrophication survey working paper on this lake, and the only copy is an unreadable scan.

So this page does not print a depth. Popular sources give numbers around thirty feet. None of them is sourced to anything, and Fathom does not launder an unsourced figure by repeating it.

One water temperature exists for this lake in any agency record: 47 degrees Fahrenheit on 20 May 2020, taken during a net survey . There is no continuous temperature record, and every gauge that ever sat on this lake was switched off on 1 January 1959 .

Buried in the wildlife division's 2020 net survey is a detail nothing else mentions : a pipeline built in the mid 1990s delivers oxygenated spring water to the middle of the lake in winter.

A shallow lake at 9,035 feet with several feet of ice on it runs out of oxygen. Fish die under the ice without anything visible happening. Somebody built a pipe to stop it, thirty years ago, and it is still the reason there is a fishery here at all.

Nothing about this water is unmanaged. A dike from before 1933 keeps it from draining. A pipeline from the 1990s keeps it breathing. A spillway rebuilt in 2023 keeps the dike standing. And in 2021 the state poisoned the whole thing to reset what lives in it. For a natural lake formed by a volcano, it is about as engineered as a reservoir.

All three have drinking water and flush toilets. Te-Ah has the only dump station. Navajo Lake Campground has a primitive dirt boat landing for small craft inside it . The Forest Service lists a boat launch at the lake, and boats, lodging, fuel and limited supplies at private resorts on the south shore . There is no potable water at the lake site itself , only in the campgrounds.

The Forest Service page and the federal booking system count Navajo Lake Campground's site types differently, 12 standard and 4 double against 15 and 1 . Both agree on 11 walk in tent sites and 27 total.

Cascade Falls Trail is 1.1 miles round trip from a trailhead at 37.49728, -112.75160 . Pit toilet and parking, no water. Open roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day . It is the only place you can stand and watch this lake come out of a cliff.

If you are standing at Cascade Falls, the water in front of you was in Navajo Lake eight and a half hours ago . From the falls it becomes the North Fork of the Virgin River.

The nearest gauge to the falls, on the North Fork near Glendale, stopped in 1978 . The nearest live one is thirty miles south at Springdale, inside Zion National Park, draining 344 square miles . That is the live river number on this page, and this lake is a small part of what it measures.

Downstream of Zion the Virgin runs through Washington County, past the reservoirs Fathom has already written up: Quail Creek, Sand Hollow and, on the Santa Clara tributary, Gunlock. The native fish those three carry a kill on sight rule for smallmouth bass to protect live in this same river system.

The other 60 percent has nowhere to go. Water that leaves by Duck Creek Spring ends up in the Sevier River, which drains into the Sevier Lake basin and reaches no sea. Two thirds of this lake evaporates in a desert sink. One third goes to the Gulf of California, at least on paper.

Utah Highway 14 runs east from Cedar City. The campgrounds are about 25 miles out, then two and a half to four and a half miles down Navajo Lake Road .

The lake surface is at 9,035 feet . The snow station four miles northwest sits at 9,830 . That elevation is not a detail:

  • The season is short. All three campgrounds and the falls trail run roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day . Everything else in the year is snow.
  • The water is cold whenever you get in it. The one reading anyone has published was 47 degrees in the third week of May .
  • Any dive here is an altitude dive. Sea level tables and default computer settings are wrong at 9,035 feet. This page is not dive instruction and gives no schedule. It just says the altitude is not optional to account for.

No winter closure statement for Highway 14 could be sourced from the state transport department, so none is printed. Check road conditions rather than this page.

Three hundred and twenty nine chub

In 2020 the state netted this lake and found almost nothing but chub. In 2021 it poisoned the whole thing. What actually fixed it may have been a fish.

Three thousand six inch fish went in from 2021. By the 2025 survey the chub catch had fallen from 287 fish to 14, and a division biologist credits the muskie rather than the poison.

The biologist's own summary : "The 2020 trend net trout catch consisted of only two small (182 to 205 mm) tiger trout... This produced the lowest catch rate observed since 2004." And: "A declining trend in trout survival at Navajo Lake culminated in a complete crash of the trout fishery between 2017 and 2020."

Chub were 99 percent of the net catch. Utah chub are native to the Bonneville basin and are not a villain in themselves. In a small high lake stocked with trout they eat the same food and win, and the trout stop coming back.

The division announced the plan in 2021 under a headline about resetting the fishery . Chub were over 90 percent of the fish in the lake, outcompeting the stocked rainbow, brook, splake and tiger trout. The southern region aquatics manager: "Trout are the preferred species to fish for at this lake" .

There was a public meeting at the Duck Creek Village fire station on 10 September, the daily limit was lifted until 31 October so anglers could take what they wanted first, and the treatment was set for October .

It was not the first time. The division's own 2020 report records a rotenone treatment here in 1997, and recommended another if the stocking then under way failed . Before the 2021 treatment the regional manager told a reporter the lake had been done "like four or five times now in history" .

What happened next is only sourced to a newspaper, and it matters. In June 2025 a division aquatics biologist told a reporter the 2021 treatment "didn't get a complete kill", blaming weather and problems mixing the chemical . The same spring survey found 31 tiger muskie from 16 to 29 inches and 76 splake, and the chub catch down from 287 fish the year before to 14.

The credit for that, in the biologist's account, goes to the tiger muskie, not the rotenone . A predator fish did what the poison did not.

No division document confirming that the 2021 treatment took place, or assessing whether it worked, could be found. No advisory council or wildlife board packet for the action could be found either. Everything after the announcement rests on one newspaper quoting one biologist, and it is marked with a lettered chip for that reason.

  • No 2026 stocking numbers. The division's stocking tool renders one alphabetical statewide table and every retrieval of it stops in the letter L, before this lake.
  • No guidebook entry. The 2026 guidebook is a large document and the fetch truncates before the N waters, so no Navajo Lake specific rule could be read. Read the current guidebook rather than this page for anything you intend to act on.
  • No Blue Ribbon status. It could not be confirmed either way, and given a fishery the division describes as having crashed between 2017 and 2020, this page does not claim it.
  • No state records. None attributed to Navajo Lake could be found.
  • Lake trout are not drawn above. The 2020 report records seventeen thousand lake trout fingerlings as planned for that June . A plan is not a stocking record, so no lake trout is on this page.

What to watch for

Cold water at nine thousand feet, a flooded cave that is closed for good reason, and nothing measuring any of it since 1959.

Everything here happens at 9,035 feet . That changes what the water does to you.

  • Cold water shock, not hypothermia, is what kills people in the first minute. The one temperature anyone has published here was 47 degrees on 20 May . A lake this high does not warm up the way a desert reservoir does.
  • Altitude changes diving completely. Sea level tables and default computer settings are wrong here. This page is not dive instruction.
  • Ice. This lake freezes, is fished through the ice, and has a pipeline pumping oxygenated water under it in winter because it would otherwise suffocate . Nobody measures the ice for you and no agency publishes a thickness.
No drowning, recovery or fatality at Navajo Lake could be sourced. Not from the state, not from the Forest Service, not from news. That is a genuine negative rather than a gap in searching, but it is not the same as saying none has happened. No agency publishes a complete incident record for this lake.

The Forest Service closes the cave at Cascade Falls to public travel, and gives two reasons: low oxygen and high water flow .

Both are worth taking literally. It is a flooded limestone conduit over a mile long that moved dye at up to twelve and a half feet a minute , it has no daylight, and the only thing on the far end of it is a lake.

Fathom is a diver led organisation. The honest position on this feature is that it is a sump, it is closed, and nothing on this page should be read as suggesting otherwise.

Nothing measures this lake in real time. Both gauges that ever sat on it were switched off on 1 January 1959 . There is no storage station, no temperature sensor, and no level gauge. The numbers in the strip above come from a snow station four miles away and a river gauge thirty miles south.

Quagga mussels are not listed here. Navajo Lake does not appear on the state's invasive mussel pages . The statewide rule still applies: if you have been in an infested water you must decontaminate before entering another. That has been law since 2008.

No harmful algal bloom advisory for Navajo Lake could be found on the state environmental department's recreational water pages . The absence of a published advisory is not the same as a published all clear.

The divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado does not run past this lake. It runs through the water coming out of it.

Those are the most recent published traces at this lake. The outline above was traced for a print and then checked against the federal water body polygons; it is 3.9 percent apart on proportion and its area lands within one percent, the closest match in this series. No agency publishes a maximum or mean depth for Navajo Lake, so none is printed here. Whether the 2021 rotenone treatment worked rests on a single newspaper quoting a single biologist and is marked as such. Nothing here is dive instruction or a dive plan.
