A Night Search on Utah Lake’s West Shore

In May 2021, a family called the Utah County Sheriff’s Office at about 1:30 in the morning. Two men had left the afternoon before to ride a waverunner on Utah Lake and had not come home. The family had already driven out to the lake and found the truck the men were driving, parked near the Knolls area on the west side. Many of their personal items were still inside it. The men were not there.

People camping in the area later told investigators that the last time they saw the two men was when they took off on the watercraft from the shore, around 7 p.m. that Saturday. What happened after that was not known.

The Search

Search and rescue officials responded and worked the area for several hours through the night, with help from a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter. On Sunday morning they started again, joined by volunteers. Between two and three hours into that second search, crews found the waverunner, and then the two men. They were about a mile southeast of the point where they had entered the water from the shore.

Both men were wearing life jackets. Officials said it still appeared they had drowned, and the state medical examiner’s office was to perform an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

The Same Stretch of Water, a Year Before

The report noted that this came just over a year after two teenagers went missing while tubing in the same Knolls area of the lake. Their bodies were found after a week-long search.
