After a 2024 Crash, an Aircraft Engine Stayed in Utah Lake

On a Friday morning in September 2024, a single-engine Cirrus SR22 went down in Utah Lake near Provo. The aircraft had departed from St. George Municipal Airport and had been cleared to land at Provo Airport. It fell short of the runway and struck the water at about 10 a.m. The National Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation.

Crews from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue unit and the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team worked the site through the day. By 5 p.m. they had recovered a large part of the submerged plane along with scattered debris. Utah County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Spencer Cannon called the crash significant. Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Jess Campbell said the aircraft came to rest in about eight and a half feet of water. Utah Lake State Park was closed to the public.

One detail in the coverage got almost no attention. Officials said the engine of the plane was still lodged several feet deep in the lake.

Why an Engine on the Bottom Matters

A recovery that lifts the airframe but leaves the powerplant is a partial recovery. An aircraft engine is not inert metal. It holds fuel lines, oil, and hydraulic fluid, and it sits in sediment until somebody goes back for it. How much of that reaches the water column, and how quickly, depends on the condition of the engine and the chemistry of the lakebed. No public assessment answering that question for this site appears to have been released.

Utah Lake is shallow for its size. State figures put its surface at roughly 96,000 acres with an average depth of about ten feet. Shallow cuts both ways. It puts objects on the bottom within reach of a working dive team rather than beyond it, and it also means anything left down there sits inside the same thin column of water the lake’s existing nutrient and algae problems already run through.

The Part of the Response Nobody Owns

Search and rescue teams are built for the first day. Their mandate is people, and in this case they carried it out under hard conditions across a long day on the water. Closing out an accident scene underwater after the people are accounted for is a different job.

That second job is the one without a clear owner. Surveying an impact site for scattered debris, documenting what is still on the bottom, and going back for components buried too deep in the sediment to lift on the first pass are not written into anyone’s mandate in Utah. That is not a criticism of the responders. It is a description of a gap.

When an investigation closes, the file reflects what happened in the air. It does not always reflect what is still in the water.
