Utah Lake’s Deadly Winds: A 1988 Warning That Still Applies

It was a Saturday afternoon in late June 1988, the kind of early summer day that feels safe. A man had taken several children, a friend’s kids, to the southwest shore of Utah Lake for a day of fishing and swimming near Lincoln Beach. Nothing about it looked dangerous.

Then the wind came.

High waves rose fast out of a lake most people think of as calm and manageable. The group was standing on a submerged rock reef when the wind hit, and when they tried to walk back toward shore, they stepped off the reef into one of the deepest holes in the lake. A man fishing nearby swam out and helped several of the group reach safety. The man who had brought the children to the lake did not make it out. He was a strong swimmer, officials said, but the drop into deep water and the force of the waves were too much. Search crews found him Monday morning, less than two days after he went into the water, after a plane spotted him from the air.

A Pattern Utah Chooses Not to See

That Saturday, the man was one of five Utahns who died in drowning accidents across the state, officials said at the time. At Utah Lake itself, the county sheriff called it the year’s first drowning there; five Utah County residents had drowned in the lake the year before, including four in a single accident when strong wind capsized their boat near Sandy Beach. Utah Lake is shallow by nature, close to nine feet deep on average today with a deepest point of around fourteen feet, not far from how the sheriff described it in 1988: fifteen feet at most, eight feet or less through most of the lake. That shallowness amplifies wind-driven waves out of proportion to how calm the lake looks. Conditions can turn in minutes, and by the time waders or swimmers recognize the danger, the shore may already be out of reach.

That has not changed in the decades since. The lake’s geography is the same. The wind patterns are the same. Utah County Sheriff Dave Bateman put it plainly at the time: people shouldn’t underestimate the danger a shallow lake poses once the weather turns. What has changed, slowly and incompletely, is public awareness, and even that has limits, because Utah Lake does not look dangerous. It looks flat and approachable. That is the problem.

What the Lake Held Then, and Still Holds Now

The death made headlines and prompted a public warning from the sheriff’s office. It did not prompt a systematic effort to account for what the lake was holding. In the years since, Utah Lake has absorbed the residue of additional drownings, boating accidents, and submerged vehicles, each adding debris and decaying material to a lake floor already stressed by decades of agricultural runoff, algal bloom cycles, and invasive species pressure.

Shallow lakes are especially effective at accumulating and concentrating pollutants. Fuel, engine oil, and lead-acid batteries in submerged vehicles and vessels do not just disappear. They bind to sediment and cycle back into the water column during storms, adding to a lake already strained by nutrient overload, the problem behind Utah Lake’s persistent algal blooms.
